I made a mistake
I should have applied for more events during the summer lol
This spring, En and I filled up our schedules with tons of conventions and events, ranging from big to small. Some we drove to, some we flew to. Some were just me and En, some were with friends. Not every comic artist likes tabling; the hours are long, the upfront costs are steep, and being social can be tricky for career shut-ins. But I love it. I love meeting people, I love traveling, I love being exposed to new art, I love seeing friends from around the country. That being said, it’s nice to be home. We moved apartments then immediately hosted both our families for a couple weeks back-to-back. So we took some time off from conventions for the summer.
Unfortunately… I miss tabling! I’m rattling my cage. I feel rested and ready to get back out there. I need to be where the people are. I need to be behind the table, hastily eating bites of salad while people look at my horny comics. Maybe next year I’ll only give myself one month break during the summer because I crave being in a con center.
FlameCon 2024
Thankfully, we’re so fucking back. I’ll be at FlameCon for the first time ever with Fawnduu, Catskullery, and En. FlameCon is my only east coast show (lest I get off the NYCC waitlist?? call me.) so I hope to see you there! We’re sharing an 8’ table, so expect to see our best-of-the-best work. We’ll be at table PR-3 along the wall.
After FlameCon, the next events on our radar are in Portland: Rose City Comic Con and Portland Zine Symposium. Keepin it local in September to close out the summer 😎 Here’s a cutie pie graphic that En drew!
July Mail Club Reward!
July’s mail club rewards are dedicated to Jackie, one of the main girlies from How Could You! She’s Molly’s roommate, Anjali’s ex, and Yona’s bestie. She’s a sorority girl, an English major, and the embodiment of avoidance and dissociation and pretending like everything is fine. Between you and me, she’s doing much better now that she’s graduated. But first you have to read how she gets to graduation in How Could You.
Postcard print and stickers are printed locally here in Portland OR. Join the mail club here! I’ll be sending out June and July’s rewards next week. Only two more girlies left of this series…
btw, Oni Press had a thing in the Library Journal in June, and it features my book! HOW COOL IS THAT?????
Amira Miles, you dirty dog…
For the 18+ tiers on Patreon, we have another dive bar rendezvous between Bunny and Amira. See more by joining one of the naughty tiers. And ALSO!!!!! —>
Available for Horn Dog tiers and up: the pencils for issue 1 of Amira the Van Life C*nt, “AMIRA in Buff World.” This is a 24 page NSFW comic featuring our favorite van life dirt bag lesbian and the first true love of her life, the bodacious Juliette. For fans of Love Lies Bleeding. And fisting.
Spider Masc - Autostraddle Comic
I’m not scared of spiders. SOME people are scared of spiders though. Read the full comic here and find my Autostraddle backlog here.
The Shepherd’s Sword - Chapter 4
Chapter 4 of The Shepherd’s Sword is complete. Thus ends another Nieve flashback chapter. Onwards now to Shep and Wayne’s journey through the forest. Chapter 5 starts on Friday, but you can read ahead on Patreon!
Commission Stream
I opened up commissions this month so that I could support my fave tattoo artist during flash day. Sketch commissions are still open until Sunday July 28, when I’ll be drawing these requests on Instagram Live. See you Sunday at 3pm PST!!
What else did I do this month, hmm…
I passed my six month check-in of doing this artist thing, and so far I’m still covering my day-to-day living expenses. Month after month, I’m finding that I’m still able to pay rent and groceries (mostly)! July was the deadline I gave myself back in January to check in and see if I needed to get a W-2 job. So far I don’t 🤞 I’m super grateful and happy and proud of myself. I’ll admit things are tight, and I have considered getting some kind of side gig. And it’s still on the table as a possibility. But for right now, things aren’t absolutely dire, so I’m going to keep pressing on.
I’ve been talking with my friends about the process of becoming a full time artist. We’re all coming to it from different perspectives, backgrounds, goals, etc. We all come to the table with different tools. It’s made me reflect on the many ways I’ve been thankfully, mercifully, able to keep doing this. I might make a blog, just so I can blog about it outside of the newsletter space, which I like to reserve for monthly round ups and the odd announcement. But do I really want to add another project to my plate? 🤔💭 idk probably yes lol
My family was in town for a bit, and we went down to see the redwoods. Then my girlfriend’s mom was in town and we went camping out by the coast. I am, every day, grateful to live where I live. I’m grateful for every opportunity to go outside, to hike, to see something new and make memories. It’s all precious.
God, I feel like there’s more to say, but I’m at the end of my email space limit. Should’ve sent a newsletter half way through July tbh, but you know… got busy. Well, maybe you’ll hear from me half way through August. Farewell for now!
Here’s some sweet treats for you to check out:
Pre-order my book! How Could You comes out this December.
July’s hike: Grove of the Titans with the family. And for camping, Lake Hebo.
“To All the Young Adults in a Post-College Reckoning, Here’s How I Made It Through” I wrote this for The Mary Sue, and it’s extremely raw and embarrassing. Vulnerability? In this economy?
I opened up a Threadless last month. Check out some shirts and other extremely cool stuff with my art on it :D
My friend Sastreon has been posting their extremely cute comic Starchy. Go read it!! I think you’ll like it.
Werewolf fact database. My 13 year old self is screaming. Say less!
